We haven’t communicated much lately. We apologies for that. We’ve been busy distributing moulin and advocating Wikimedia.

An update of the software is planned for the coming quarter, thanks to the efforts of Emmanuel and people from the OpenZim project.

Please, allow me to translate a substract of a comment we just received from a happy user of moulin in Arabic:

I remember the image of children and generations of impoverished third-world poor who suffered from deprivation of knowledge and lack of awareness […] to learn the basics of various sciences, through a small CD.

I was in Taipei last week to attend the Wikimania 2007 conference. It was a great event, with a lot of people interested by moulin and offline solutions.

Since a lot has happened recently, I wanted to give you an update on moulin’s status and the roadmap.

  • the “new” moulin software is ready. We only need localization and tests for this version to be distributed. The most localized language we have is Arabic, thanks to Bassem Jarkas. We will release this arabic version _this week_ and then release various languages versions (without localizations) as we go to demonstrate the need of translators we have.

What we want to do now:

  • release polished versions in Arabic, French, Persian, Portuguese, Spanish and English.
  • release other languages version everybody wants
  • do an OLPC version of moulin: moulin already works on the OLPC but we need to customize the U.I and maybe tweak some other stuffs.
  • add an optional (we will release 2 versions) full-text search engine (this will require additional space) with technology from Ksana
  • add support for offline contributions to the real Wikipedia (with OLPC)
  • a mod_moulin for Apache to able server/client in a browser
  • add a server version for school-like environments
  • a pocket device (like Nokia 770) version

Today, I have registered in France, a non-profit organization named
“Kunnafoni” which will allow us to:

  • receive funds/donations
  • burn mastered CD
  • Distribute the new versions in Mali and other countries where people are willing to distribute it.
  • others access-to-information related projects.

As you can see, we have a lot of interesting stuff to come ; but please, if you can translate or test, help us with the releases !
